The Keystation 49 MK3 builds on the success of the two previous versions. Keystation has long been a favourite of all digital musicians, thanks to its affordable price and high functionality. The 49-note keybed features velocity-sensitive synth-action keys. This provides a natural feel for all players no matter your skillset. It also feels great for piano players wanting to make the leap to digital music production.
The ergonomic design features highly responsive pitch and modulation wheels. The pitch wheel can be used to affect the pitch of your sound while playing. The modulation wheel is used for modulating your sound with in-program effects. It includes a USB-MIDI connection for playing virtual instruments, recording melodies and controlling recording software.
The controller is purposely designed to work in conjunction with digital audio workstations and music software. The keystation includes additional controls designed to communicate directly with your music software.
Transport controls are included for quick and easy navigation when recording melodies and sounds. Stop, Play, Record, Up, Down, Left, Right buttons allow you use the keyboard as your main production hub, minimising the need to switch to your computer mouse and keyboard.
A volume fader is also included for controlling the volume on your virtual instruments and other sounds. Advanced functionality gives you the ability to customise the controls on the keystation. For example, you could customise the pitch and mod wheels to control the velocity of your drums for more expressive automation.
The compact design makes the Keystation highly portable, allowing you to take your controller with you on the move. It is also class-compliant and USB powered class-compliant meaning you don’t need to install any additional drivers. You can also connect your Keystation to your iOS-compatible devices via the Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (sold separately).
The controller also includes a range of connectivity including a 1/4-inch (6.3mm) sustain pedal input for adding an external pedal for added expression. A Kensington security lock is also included as well as a 2-way power switch for turning off your instrument when not in use. This can be highly useful for live performances.
The release of Reason 11.2 introduces two new exciting features – the Beat Map Algorhythmic Drummer and MIDI Out/ Copy Pattern to track (Reason Rack plugin). The new Beat Map rack player device generates its own rhythmic patterns using custom algorithms to create unique and dynamic percussive sequences.
The Beat Map Algorhythmic Drummer provides you with four channels on the front panel with dedicated controls that affect the density of the channel's drum sound. The four channels are comprised of Kick, Snare, Hat and Perc. Increasing the density of a channel will increase its appearance in the sequence. The possibilities are endless, giving your drum kits a life of their own.
Reason Studios listened to feedback from their fans, with version 11.2 introducing a MIDI output device, as well as the ability to drag MIDI notes to track. This allows you to use players to sequence any instruments within your DAW, as well as convert CV signals using MIDI CC with the new MIDI Out device. You can now also drag MIDI clips directly from Redrum, Dr OctoRex and the Matrix to your sequencer for effortless music making.
Take control over your music with the rack. The rack is the beating heart of Reason 11. As you write your song, the rack grows with it; as you add more instruments and effects to the rack. Open and close instruments easily and it's all routed for you - so when you add more and more instruments and effects you can be sure that it won't mess up your project. If you want to change any of the routings over the instruments then the rack can be flipped so you can edit it manually. This versatility sets Reason 11 ahead of the competition.
The ideas in your head, but you need the tools to get recorded. This is where Reason 11's massive selection of instruments comes in. Create searing leads with the Europa synthesizer, or delve deeper with the semi-modular Thor synthesizer. Create amazing beats with Kong - Reason's bespoke drum machine. And now with Reason 11, the Scenic Hybrid Instrument is a new instrument capable of creating a range of powerful and atmospheric sounds.
From warming up a synth using a saturator, to blasting your beats with pure distortion - the effects on show with Reason will give your sounds the edge they need to stand out. These effects include (but are not limited to): The RV7000 MkII reverb which provides a range of different impulse response models, the Echo, which brings the accuracy and perfection of digital delay in an easy to use package, and the Pulveriser Demolition, which is a filter/distortion/modulation tool that does to sounds exactly what its name suggests. If you're after tools that perfect your songs, then the MClass Mastering Suite provides you with everything to bring out the utmost quality in your music.
If you're already ingrained in another DAW system but you want to utilise all of Reason's amazing instruments and tools, then you'll be pleased to know that it can all be used as a plug-in with any other DAW. Just load it up and loop with Dr Octo Rex in Ableton Live or play realistic pianos with Radical Piano in Reaper. Reason works anywhere - making it your go-to tool for music production - wherever you make music.
