Few distortion pedals hold the same iconic status as the Big Muff. And in particular - the 1973 Ram's Head. Heard in countless recordings and live performances, the Ram's Head has been a favourite for a plethora of top-tier guitarists. Most notably, David Gilmour. Why? Because it excels at producing sweet fuzz tones with immense clarity (can be heard all over Animals & The Wall). So, naturally, its recreation here remains faithful to the original design.
The early Big Muffs varied wildly as with each production run components changed, so even with the same variants, two models could sound radically different. Consistency was important with this recreation and so EHX focused on the 'Violet' models, distinguishable by their blue/purple typeface. These had less of a mid-scoop and slightly less gain than other V2s helping them be more expressive and open- hence why Gilmour favoured them. This smoother, highly-articulate sound has been perfectly captured here, and truly elevates your tone when engaged.
That's not to say that Electro Harmonix haven't polished it for the modern stage. Featuring true bypass switching, you can trust that your sound will remain consistent when running through the Ram's Head. What this means, is that you can slot it straight into your pedalboard and maintain your own, personalised tone in performance. It's durable, too. So you can take it with you wherever you go, and have total peace-of-mind when setting up. But don't worry. It still flaunts its heritage with a stunningly vintage aesthetic, as a nod to its original '73 style. It wouldn't be a Muff without it.
